Microsoft is now collaborating with the Renault & Nissan alliance to develop a cloud-based service for cars.

This will help the manufacturers to build self-driving cars by 2020.

The services will be based on Microsoft’s Azure cloud device, which among others, it is going to include navigation, predictive maintenance, and over-the-air software updates.

Renault & Nissan’s plans are to launch more than 10 vehicles with autonomous drive technology by 2012. Last January, Nokia’s former executive Ogi Redzic was hired to the alliance to lead the efforts towards this goal.

Last week, the alliance mentioned that they will be buying the French software development company Sylpheo so that services like ride-hailing or car sharing, are included in the features.
